Brussels: (RightNow) The Pacific Ocean’s surface temperature has reached a record 29.70 degrees Celsius. Experts warn that El Niño and human activities could lead to a rise in global temperatures due to climate change.

According to the European Union’s Copernicus Service, 2026 could become the hottest year on record. The intensifying El Niño phenomenon may also set new heat records in 2027. In September, temperatures in the Pacific’s Niño 3.4 region reached record levels.

Copernicus Director Carlo Buontempo stated that the current El Niño is unusual, but it’s too early to call it the most powerful in history. Climate change is already raising ocean temperatures, complicating the effects of the current El Niño.

It is important to note that El Niño is a natural increase in sea temperature in the Pacific’s equatorial region. It can affect weather patterns worldwide, increasing the risk of droughts and floods.

Experts have noted that El Niño’s impact often appears the year after its peak. This phenomenon occurs every two to seven years and can last from 9 to 12 months.
