UNICEF’s report uncovers online sexual exploitation of 20 million children in 21 countries, urging tech companies to enhance child protection measures.
New York: (RightNow) A new UNICEF report reveals that nearly 20 million children aged 12 to 17 in 21 countries have been victims of online sexual exploitation through technology.
According to the report, almost one in five children in internet-using countries faces sexual exploitation. The study surveyed 21,000 children and included interviews with affected youth.
Over 15 million children were exposed to unwanted sexual content, while 9 million were coerced into sharing sexual conversations or images. More than half of these incidents occurred on social media platforms, yet less than 1% were reported to authorities.
UNICEF urges technology companies and governments to strengthen platform designs and laws to protect children. Concerns were also raised about the threat of fake sexual images created through artificial intelligence.
It is noteworthy that UNICEF works globally to protect children’s rights and emphasizes the need for special measures to safeguard children in the digital age.
