Kuala Lumpur: (Right Now News) Malaysia has imposed a ban on new social media account registrations for children under 16. This measure aims to protect children from harmful online content.

According to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission, the new regulations have been enforced from Monday. Social media platforms are now required to verify new users’ ages against official records.

These rules apply to platforms like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, and others. Violations of these regulations could result in fines up to 10 million ringgit (approximately 2.5 million USD).

Authorities have stated that the goal is not to keep children away from the internet but to enhance user safety. It also aims to make parents and guardians more accountable.

It is noteworthy that harmful content has increased in recent years, prompting the government to tighten oversight of social media companies. Malaysia joins countries prioritizing children’s online safety.
