North America: (Right Now News) A new study reveals a threefold increase in red cards during the current FIFA World Cup. The improvement in Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology is cited as a major reason.

Researchers from Northeastern University report that 14 red cards have been issued so far in this tournament. In comparison, only 4 red cards were shown in both the 2018 and 2022 World Cups.

The study also notes that on at least three occasions, referees upgraded yellow cards to red after reviewing VAR footage.

Researchers state that improved VAR technology is helping referees more accurately identify dangerous fouls, leading to an increase in red cards.

It is noteworthy that while red cards have increased, the average number of yellow cards has decreased. The current tournament averages 2.52 yellow cards per match.
