During her first press briefing, Zakaria faced criticism for stumbling and providing unsatisfactory answers. In response to a journalist’s question, she admitted to not passing the bar exam.

According to American media investigations, her name is not listed in any state bar association records. Zakaria did not attempt the exam a second time.

Following the criticism, Zakaria stated that, according to legal advice, it is acceptable to call herself a lawyer as long as she does not provide formal legal advice.
