Islamabad: (RightNow) President Asif Ali Zardari states that the Indus Water Treaty cannot be unilaterally suspended or rendered ineffective. This statement was made during a ceremony at the Presidential Palace where UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres was awarded the Nishan-e-Imtiaz.

The event was attended by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, and the Speaker of the National Assembly. Antonio Guterres expressed gratitude for receiving Pakistan’s highest national honor. President Zardari praised the UN Secretary-General’s efforts for global peace during their meeting.

In his address, President Zardari emphasized that water should not be used as a weapon or a means of political pressure. He stressed the need for resolving the Jammu and Kashmir dispute for sustainable peace.

He stated that Pakistan will continue to support the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination. Pakistan faces terrorism from groups operating from Afghan soil.

It is noteworthy that President Zardari mentioned Afghan territory should not be used against Pakistan or any other country. There is no alternative to negotiations for resolving regional disputes.
