According to American media, a CNN team was on board the Filipino ship and recorded the incident. Filipino officials stated that the ship was on a mission to supply fuel to fishermen.
A spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the Filipino ship was attempting to illegally enter Chinese waters. They stated that the Coast Guard acted in accordance with national laws.
