New Delhi: (RightNow) Sonam Wangchuk, a renowned Himalayan engineer and student leader, has been released from Jodhpur Jail by the Indian government. Wangchuk was detained under India’s National Security Act, leading to intensified student protests in Ladakh.

During Wangchuk’s arrest, four people were killed and dozens injured in Ladakh. The Indian government attributed the protests to his speeches. Wangchuk had announced a hunger strike to demand constitutional rights for Ladakh.

The Indian Ministry of Home Affairs announced Wangchuk’s release, expressing a commitment to peace, stability, and continued dialogue. Following his release, Wangchuk joined the Kakroach Janata Party.

Wangchuk began a hunger strike at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar, prompting doctors to warn about his health. Several Bollywood personalities and opposition leaders have joined in support.

It is noteworthy that Sonam Wangchuk played a significant role in educational reforms in Ladakh in 1988. He was awarded the Ramon Magsaysay Award in 2018.
