Islamabad: (RightNow) The Election Commission of Pakistan has decided to convene another consultation meeting in 15 days to determine the date for local elections in 23 districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. This decision was made in a meeting chaired by Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja.

The meeting was attended by members of the Election Commission, the Secretary of the Election Commission, the Chief Secretary of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and other officials. It was informed that the Election Commission has completed the delimitation process and is consulting with the provincial government to set the election date.

The Chief Election Commissioner stated that holding local elections is a constitutional requirement under Article 140A. According to Section 219(4) of the Elections Act, elections must be held within 120 days after the expiry of the institutions’ term.

It was reported in the meeting that the term of local bodies in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa ended on March 14 and June 19, 2026. The Election Commission has completed all preparations for the elections and requires the cooperation of the provincial government.

It should be noted that consultation with the provincial government is ongoing under Section 219(3) of the Elections Act and the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Local Councils (Conduct of Elections) Rules 2021. The provincial government has assured administrative support for the elections.
