Experts in Pakistan have raised concerns over Aflatoxin B1 in chilies, posing health and economic risks.
Islamabad: (Right Now News) Experts have expressed concern over the dangerous levels of Aflatoxin B1 found in chilies used in Pakistan. Climate change, extreme heat, and drought are causing the growth of toxic mold in chili crops.
Recent reports indicate that the fungus Aspergillus flavus produces Aflatoxin B1 in chilies, which is among the carcinogenic substances. Various studies have recorded 80 micrograms per kilogram of Aflatoxin in ground chilies.
Some chili products are labeled “For Use in Pakistan Only,” indicating they do not meet international standards. Experts have declared substandard food a threat to public health and the economy.
According to experts, strict food safety standards, regular laboratory testing, and effective monitoring are essential. These measures are crucial to ensuring the safety of food items, including chilies.
It is noteworthy that the government has been urged to train farmers in modern safe farming techniques. Monitoring food quality scientifically is necessary to prevent a public health crisis.
