The Irrigation Department warns of toxic substances in Indus River water, posing health risks.
Jamshoro: (RightNow) The Indus River water is no longer drinkable, warns the Irrigation Department. The Executive Engineer of Kotri Barrage states the inclusion of toxic substances is dangerous.
According to the Irrigation Department, the contamination is due to chemical-laden water from Manchar Lake and Matiari Sugar Mills. The Superintendent Engineer of Kalri Baghar Division has been informed.
The use of this water may lead to diseases like kidney failure, hepatitis, and skin disorders. The TDS level has increased, prompting a halt in water usage.
As of September 30, the TDS was 660, rising to 940 by October 1. The WHO limit is 1000 mg/L, and Mehran University’s report confirms the water is highly toxic.
It is important to note that the Indus River supplies water to Karachi, Hyderabad, and other areas. The Irrigation Department has instructed all relevant agencies to stop water supply.
