MIT’s new robot can fly and swim, aiding ocean conservation efforts.
Boston: (RightNow) The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has developed a unique robot that can fly like birds and swim like fish. Priced at $300, this lightweight robot can be used for ocean conservation and monitoring.
According to scientists, the robot can fly at a speed of 13.4 miles per hour and swim at 2.2 miles per hour. It is made with nylon wings and a tail, painted with nanoparticles to protect it from water.
The AeroAquatic Robotics team created this robot, which resembles diving birds. It uses its wings for both flying and swimming. However, it has not yet undergone complete testing.
The robot’s development is based on research into the wings of diving birds. Initial tests were conducted in a water tank in Massachusetts and later in Lake Geneva, Switzerland.
It is noteworthy that this robot underwent a year of experimental phases and could play a significant role in marine life conservation in the future.
