Lahore: (RightNow) The Lahore High Court has directed the Punjab government to create a new, comprehensive policy for Muharram processions. This directive must be completed within four months and implemented before the next Muharram.

The court issued this decision on a petition by Syed Mujeeb Ali Gilani, stating that the current policy is outdated and needs restructuring according to present circumstances.

The Punjab government and the Home Department have been instructed to clarify procedures for issuing, renewing, suspending, and canceling licenses in the new policy.

The court emphasized that it is the state’s responsibility to establish an effective system balancing religious freedom and public order.

It is noteworthy that disputes over Muharram procession licenses are presented in courts annually, highlighting the need for a new policy.
