Sindh’s 770 million rupees flood budget faces scrutiny; independent audit proposed.
Karachi: (RightNow) Sindh’s flood fighting budget of 770 million rupees is under scrutiny. The funds were spent without any major flood emergency last year.
The Sindh Irrigation Department has requested approval of 770 million rupees from the Chief Minister. Sources indicate that several projects were either incomplete or their costs were exaggerated.
The central technical committee approved these expenses, while chief engineers verified the bills. The Irrigation Department has defended the demand for additional funds.
Irrigation experts questioned the justification of spending such a large amount without a major flood crisis. The Secretary of the Sindh Chamber of Agriculture has called for an independent third-party audit.
It is noteworthy that Sindh’s irrigation system already faces defects. Water shortages have increased farmers’ difficulties. Past incidents include the collapse of the Sukkur Barrage and the Rohri Canal structure.
