Buenos Aires: (RightNow) Argentina’s legendary footballer Lionel Messi has announced his retirement from international football. His iconic No. 10 shirt cannot be permanently retired.

The president of the Argentine Football Association, Claudio Tapia, stated in 2024 that the No. 10 would be retired after Messi’s retirement. However, FIFA rules pose a significant obstacle.

According to FIFA regulations, teams can only assign shirt numbers from 1 to 26 for the FIFA World Cup. Therefore, leaving the No. 10 vacant in major events is not feasible.

Argentina previously attempted to retire Diego Maradona’s shirt. Before the 2002 World Cup, FIFA did not allow it, and Ariel Ortega wore the number.

It is noteworthy that Messi’s legacy and impact on Argentine football will endure for generations.
