Beijing: (RightNow) The rise of artificial intelligence in China has introduced a new trend of licensing faces for AI dramas. Individuals can earn between $15 and $700 by allowing their images to be used in these productions.

According to a Rest of World report, several online platforms in China offer this service, where people register their photos. Producers select faces from various categories, such as ordinary girl or supermodel.

In March 2026, Shenzhen-based company ‘Act ID’ launched its service. Approximately 800 individuals registered, with 300 agreeing to license their faces. The company used faces of 10 people in two dramas, paying $15 to $74 per episode.

It is important to note that the growing trend of AI has led to reduced budgets for traditional dramas and advertisements. New Kula Company has also started a face licensing business, setting a minimum price of $74 per image.

Legal issues are also emerging in China, including unauthorized use of faces. The Beijing Internet Court ruled that using someone’s image in AI face swap technology without permission could be illegal.
