Riyadh: (RightNow) The Saudi Supreme Court has overturned the death sentence of Sri Lankan expatriate Anujan Sivarasa, who was accused of blasphemy. Anujan Sivarasa was arrested for making derogatory comments on Facebook.

Sri Lanka’s Deputy Foreign Minister Arun Hemachandra confirmed that following the Supreme Court’s decision, the government is reviewing the legal details. He also thanked the authorities of both countries.

The case began in June when Anujan commented on social media in Al-Ahsa about the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). He immediately apologized but was arrested in July.

Initially, the Al-Ahsa court sentenced him to 5 years in prison and a fine of 3 million Saudi Riyals, which was later changed to a death sentence. After concerns and efforts from Sri Lanka, the death sentence was overturned.

It is noteworthy that Sivarasa’s family has not been in contact with him since September 28. The Sri Lankan government is working on legal aspects for his early release.
