Karachi: (RightNow) An investigation reveals that inmates at Karachi Central Jail are charged exorbitant fees for WhatsApp calls. Prisoners pay between 15 thousand and 2.5 lakh rupees to speak with family or friends.

Superintendent Abdul Kareem Abbasi claims ignorance of these activities, stating that the jail’s WhatsApp password is changed weekly to prevent such incidents.

Sources indicate that a group led by Rizwan Memon, known as Rizwan Ganja, is involved in the jail’s operations. This group collects money to provide inmates with luxurious facilities.

The same group charged a builder from the Memon community 2.5 lakh rupees for a 3-minute WhatsApp call, after receiving 25 lakh rupees to secure a B-class cell for him.

It is noteworthy that due to the mobile network being blocked, the jail’s Wi-Fi is used for calls, leading to high charges.
