Moscow: (RightNow) The World Health Organization (WHO) has requested clarification from Russian authorities regarding the death of a laboratory worker from the plague in the Irkutsk region. According to Russian officials, no recent cases of the plague have been reported in the area.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated that the organization is in contact with Russian authorities following the death of an employee at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Research Institute. Initial reports claimed that the woman was infected with plague bacteria.

Russian officials informed WHO that no new plague cases have emerged in the region. The affected individuals have been monitored, and no presence of highly dangerous bacteria has been found.

This incident is significant as plague outbreaks have historically caused millions of deaths. WHO has requested further information to clarify the situation.

It is noteworthy that the woman fell ill after a test tube broke at the Irkutsk institute and passed away on October 2. Reports indicate that 200 individuals who had contact with her were medically monitored.
