The UN has sought details from India on the deletion of millions of minority voters’ names, especially in West Bengal’s Nandigram constituency.
New Delhi: (Right Now News) The United Nations has requested clarification from India regarding the deletion of minority names from electoral lists. Three UN special representatives have written to the Indian government seeking a response to allegations of millions of voter names being removed.
The UN has stated that 9.1 million names were deleted in West Bengal and 52 million across 12 states. Detailed data on voters removed based on religion and ethnicity has been requested.
UN representatives have expressed concern that the mass deletion of names from voter lists is affecting minorities, particularly Muslims. The Indian government has been asked to provide complete details within 60 days.
This issue has notably arisen in the Nandigram assembly constituency, where allegedly 95% of the deleted voters were Muslims, despite Muslims constituting 25% of the population there.
It is noteworthy that according to Indian media, the Indian Election Commission’s special revision program has reviewed the voter lists in West Bengal.
