Jerusalem: (Right Now News) Supporters of President Mahmoud Abbas secured the majority of seats in the Palestinian local elections. For the first time in nearly two decades, voting took place in a city in Gaza.

According to Palestinian officials, these elections were held under sensitive conditions. It was the first electoral process in Gaza since the Israeli war, and the first elections in Gaza since 2006.

Voting in the Gaza city of Deir al-Balah was seen as symbolically significant. Initial results show Abbas’s Fatah party won 6 out of 15 seats.

A local party, considered close to Hamas, managed to win only 2 seats. The remaining seats were secured by two other local groups.

It is noteworthy that low voter turnout in Gaza was due to war conditions, displacement, and destroyed infrastructure.
